BMS Tennis teams off to good start

The Berrien Middle School tennis teams are off to a good start despite the weather being uncooperative and several matches canceled due to rain.

BMS kicked off their season on Wednesday, February 19, with matches in Lanier County.  The girls’ team lost by a score of 2 to 3. Karla Wiley, #1 Singles, won her match by a score of 8 to 2.

Emmi Warren, #2 Singles, defeated her competition by a score of 9 to 7. Doubles team Katie Giddens and Victoria Varn also won their match by a score of 4 to 2.

The BMS boys’ team dominated their matches against Lanier County winning by 5 to 0.  Fischer Hogan, #1 Singles defeated his competition by a score of 8 to 1. Rowan Mathis, #2 Singles, won his match by a score of 8 to 2, and #3 Singles player Landon Rainey won his match by a score of 8 to 4.

The BMS boys’ doubles teams also had strong performances. The #1 Doubles team of Logan Rowe and Stoney Cooper won their match by a score of 8 to 4. Gabe Hardeman and Aidyn Hurst, #2 Doubles dominated their opponents, winning the match 8 to 0.  Andrew Flowers and Connor Fender also won their match 4 to 0.

With two scheduled matches rained out on February 20 and 26, the BMS teams finally played their next match on March 4 at Fitzgerald.

The girls’ team defeated the Fitzgerald girls by a score of 5 to 0.  All three singles players for BMS won their matches handily.  Karla Wiley, #1 Singles, won by a score of 8 to 4; Emmi Warren, #2 Singles, won by a score of 8 to 3; and Kailey Griffin, #3 Singles, won by a score of 8 to 3. The singles set the stage, and the doubles team also brought their A games.

In the #1 Doubles match, Kayla Wiley and Allison Roberts won their match 8 to 4. The winning effort continued with the #2 Doubles team Alli Butler and Ellie Taylor defeated their opponents by a score of 8 to 3. Kenley Hughes and Jayden Futch also won their match by a score of 6 to 1.

The BMS boys team also stepped on the courts looking for their second win. Fischer Hogan, #1 Singles player, defeated his opponent by a score of 8 to 1 with #2 Singles player, Rowan Mathis, also posting an 8 to 1 score. Landon Rainey won his match by forfeit as Fitzgerald did not have a #3 Singles player.

Logan Rowe and Stoney Cooper, #1 Doubles team, shut out the Fitzgerald team with a score of 8 to 0. Fitzgerald did not have a #2 Doubles team giving the BMS #2 Doubles team of Gabe Hardeman and Aidyn Hurst the win by a forfeit.  Other BMS doubles who won their matches against Fitzgerald were Brody Moffett and Conner Fender with a score of 7 to 5, and Guillermo Cortez and Jake Moody by the score of 6 to 3.

The BMS tennis teams will make up the rained-out match against Irwin County at home on March 9, followed by a regularly scheduled match against Thomasville on March 10 in Nashville. The teams are scheduled to travel to Telfair County on March 12 and will play rained out matches on March 13 against Lanier County at home. The rained-out game against Thomasville is scheduled for March 26 in Thomasville.
